Emerald – a green gemstone with historical significance

Emerald is a beautiful green gemstone with roots in the Greek word smaragdos, meaning “green stone.” The most sought-after emeralds come from the Muzo mine in Colombia, but they are also found in Brazil, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. As a member of the beryl family, the emerald owes its characteristic colour to chromium – and its elegance has made it a prized choice in jewellery throughout history.
