The name originates from the Greek opallios, referring to the play of color, and from the Sanskrit upala, meaning gemstone. Opal is amorphous, meaning non-crystalline, and is composed of the element silicon.

There are many varieties of opal: black, white, light, milky, as well as boulder, matrix, fire, and Yowah Nuts opals. They all display unique color play, and no two are alike.

Opals are valued based on their body color, the sparkling fire, the direction of the play of color, cut, inclusions, and weight. The hardness ranges from 5½ to 6½ on the Mohs scale.
