Which material should I choose?

Aluminium oxide (corundum):

• The most commonly used abrasive for steel
• Suitable for soft and medium-hard steel
• Maintains sharpness longer during regular grinding and cutting

Silicon carbide:

• Harder but more brittle than aluminium oxide
• Best for soft metals (gold, silver, aluminium, copper, brass) and hard materials (glass, ceramics, cast iron)
• Not optimal for regular steel, as the grains wear down quickly

Diamond:

• The hardest abrasive
• Used for very hard materials (carbide tools, ceramics, stone)
• Not suitable for steel – the carbon in the steel reacts with the diamond (graphitization) at high temperature, which destroys the cutting edge
