The garnet group occurs in over ten varieties. Six main types are used as gemstones: pyrope, almandite, spessartite, grossularite, andradite and uvarovite. The group has almost the same chemical composition, with a hardness between 6.5 and 7.5 on Moh's scale, but with strong color differences.
