The Akoya mussels used to culture Cultured Pearls, their can produce pearls between 2 and 10 mm.

Technicians open the live pearl mussel then gently surgically implant a small shell bead along with a tiny piece of mantle tissue. This bead is the nucleus around which the mussel secretes layer after layer of nacre.

The mussel makes three to four layer per day.
